How to calculate asphalt tonnage

This calculator converts an area and thickness into a volume, then converts that volume into weight using an asphalt density, and finally into US tons.

Volume = Area × Thickness
Weight = Volume × Asphalt density
US Tons = Weight ÷ 2,000

Actual asphalt mix density varies by aggregate blend and compaction — this calculator defaults to 145 lb/ft³ as a typical estimating figure, but your supplier's or project's specification should take precedence whenever you have one.

Assumptions

  • Thickness is uniform across the whole area — for a sloped or variable-depth surface, split it into sections and add the results.
  • The default density is a typical reference value, not an exact figure for every asphalt mix.
  • Waste/overage is 0% unless you choose otherwise — it isn't assumed for you.

Asphalt calculation example

A 20 ft × 40 ft driveway (800 sq ft) at 3" thick, using the default density of 145 lb/ft³:

How much does asphalt weigh?

This calculator defaults to 145 lb/ft³, a commonly used estimating density for compacted hot-mix asphalt. Real-world density varies with the aggregate blend, binder content, and how well the asphalt is compacted — most hot-mix asphalt falls somewhere in the 140–150 lb/ft³ range, but it is not a fixed physical constant. If your supplier or project specification gives you an exact density, enter it in Advanced options instead of the default.

How many square feet does one ton of asphalt cover?

Coverage depends on thickness — a thinner layer stretches the same ton of asphalt over more area. At the default density of 145 lb/ft³:

  • 2" thick: about 83 sq ft per US ton
  • 3" thick: about 55 sq ft per US ton
  • 4" thick: about 41 sq ft per US ton

These figures scale with the density you use, so they'll shift slightly if you change it in Advanced options.

Asphalt tons vs. cubic yards

Cubic yards measure volume — how much space the asphalt takes up. Tons measure weight — how much it weighs once delivered. Converting between the two requires a density assumption, since the same volume of denser material weighs more. At 145 lb/ft³, a cubic yard (27 cu ft) weighs about 3,915 lbs, or roughly 1.96 tons — but this ratio shifts if your asphalt's actual density is different, so don't treat it as a universal constant.

How much you actually need depends on your project's layout, compaction, supplier minimums, transportation, and site conditions — there's no single universal percentage that fits every job, so use your judgment or ask your supplier.
